I couldn’t pretend that I understood how Savannah’s suggestion would be possible, but I sure as hell knew that it rang true. Something truly messed up was happening in the Ravenstone pack, and after the haze spoke in its own voice, I had to accept that I was pretty messed up too.

It made sense that the two things would be related.

Although I knew that I lost control to the haze at times, I hadn’t really understood that it had its own consciousness until the interaction with Savannah. She compared that consciousness inside me to Jekyll and Hyde, and again, it made some sense to me. I wouldn’t have called the haze evil, necessarily, but he certainly had fewer inhibitions than I did. He was a part of me that did what he wanted, said what he wanted, and had nearly marked Savannah whether she wanted it or not.

As he stepped towards her, I fought harder than I’d ever fought for anything before to wrest control back. I would never force myself on her, but apparently, he had no such compunction, which made finding out how to stop him more urgent than ever before.

If someone did this to me on purpose to cover up whatever was going on in the pack, they were going to pay, for me and for all the others.

Most of all, I wanted some fucking answers.

The papers I brought with me had fallen to the ground during the haze’s takeover, but with him under control, I picked them up again and unrolled them to show them to my mate.

“When we were in the medical centre earlier, we found some information about our exiles in the personnel database. They were all signed by the same person: Kyle Lewison. I read his bio and it sounds like he might be involved in genetic research. If you’re right about something being done to me, I think he’d be the best place to start.”

Savannah’s face paled as she took the papers from me, glancing down at them in dismay. “Kyle? Are you sure?”

“Do you know him?” I still didn’t have a clue what her connection to the pack was. I wanted to know, along with a million other things about her; there just hadn’t been time to ask her about it yet.

Savannah swallowed hard as she flipped through the papers, seeing the signature on each one the same as I had. “We just met, but yeah, I’ve spent a bit of time with him. You’re right about his scientific leanings: he’s the one who told me about the genetic manipulation, so that’s definitely in his wheelhouse. He’s the one I saw giving Lee the injection too.”

Fuck. All the signs pointed towards this bastard being right at the heart of things, and the idea of Savannah being anywhere near him roused every protective instinct I’d ever had. “It’s not safe for you to go back there. You should come with me.”

My mate’s warm brown eyes returned to me, looking both appreciative and amused.
